What does the term "Jew" mean to you? Maybe you have never even given it serious thought. For many people over the last two centuries or so it has often meant a "person of the Jewish race". This idea has its origins in ignorance and so-called "scientific racism". Unfortunately, the erroneous notion that Jews constitute a "race" is still believed by a significant number of people. The "Jewish race" myth underpins the "Christian" concept of the "Messianic (i.e. Christian) Jew". So in the same way that, say, a "black" person who converts to Christianity might be called a "Christian Black" a Jew who converts is called a "Christian or Messianic Jew". Does this matter? Should we not just wait for public opinion to catch up with biological science? Why make a fuss? Well there are good reasons not to just sit around and hope things will get better on their own.The "Jewish race" myth has been a source of terrifying problems for everyone it has touched. This has not only included Jews but also non-Jews. During the Shoah ("Holocaust"), for example, a small but significant proportion of the "Jews" who were murdered were only "Jews" in a "racial" sense. By any non-racist standard (including Jewish standards) they were non-Jews. Neither is this just a matter of academic or historical interest. Where there is "race", racial discrimination will surely follow. This has certainly proved to be the case with the "Messianic Jew".Inside you will find details of two Christian associations of "Messianic (i.e. Christian) Jews" who exclude fellow "non-Jewish Christians" from full membership because of their "non-Jewish" ethnic/racial parentage. In other words, they practice racial discrimination. Apart from finding such practices unacceptable in their own right, it is particularly objectionable to me as a Jew that my community should be so directly and unjustly implicated. Inside you will also find some general articles on racism, racial discrimination and what it really means to be a Jew. |
