The Lederer Foundation Revisionists

I few years ago a UK group suggested rewriting certain sections of the "Lord's Prayer" so as to remove its gender bias. They produced a version that began, "Our Father and Mother who art in heaven, etc." This was condemned royally by rightwing Christians throughout the land. However, this sense of outrage does not extend to condemning Christian publishers for corrupting the sacred liturgy of other faiths.

I was recently send a copy of "The Messianic Passover Haggadah" (The Lederer Foundation). This is a most appalling desecration of Jewish liturgy. It has all the characteristics of antisemitic revisionist propaganda.

The Seder meal is a celebration of Israel's redemption from slavery in Egypt. Pesach (Passover) is a festival celebration of Israel's freedom. Nonetheless, by subtle perversions, the Lederer Revisionist Haggadah turns this into a celebration of redemption, not from Egypt, but from sin through the Crucifixion.

So why should Christians bother to take a Jewish festive service and pervert it from its original meaning? Let us set aside the tactical needs of missions to the Jews for one moment and instead look elsewhere.

A major difference of opinion between Jews and Christians concerns whether or not Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah of Israel. The response of some Christian chauvinists to this debate is to attempt to create facts on the ground. Having a revisionist "seder" service is their way of putting two fingers up to the Jewish community, whilst at the same time asserting their claim that Jesus was the Messiah of Israel. No doubt if one pointed out to them that their behaviour is not only based on a logical fallacy, but is also dishonest and unfair it would have little effect. These people appear so committed to the notion that they are right to force their views down the throats of other people that all thoughts of honesty or fairness evaporate.

Such people have been dubbed Christofascists by some liberal Christians. In fact their brand of Christianity bears close resemblance to political fascism. Jesus is their Fuhrer and they are his storm troopers.

The only hope is that liberal Christians will hold out the hand of tolerant friendship to Jews without the assassin's ring that Christofascist publications like the Lederer Foundation's revisionist "haggadah" represents.
